Home in AustinLogan’s first Soccer game (U11)

This summer, our family embarked on a 56-night RV adventure from Austin, Texas to the North Eastern and New England part of the United States. We covered over 5,000+ miles across 19 states. From scenic drives to iconic landmarks, below is a snapshot of our journey.

Week 0: RV Trip Planning, Packing and Logan’s 10th Birthday

The week before we left and right up to the day we set sail was the most hectic. Between hosting a 10th Birthday party for Logan with friends and family, cleaning and purging our house for rent, and prepping the items to bring a long, there were moments that felt like we would never leave. We work well under pressure though given our renter moves that Sunday July 14th (one day before our scheduled departure).

Majority would say that the planning phase of road trips are the funnest! To help with our travel route, campground stays and activity planning, we used RV Trip Wizard tool in addition to requesting tips from friends and a few facebook groups many weeks before.

Note: the driving distance and duration are estimates from one campground/stay to another as provided by RV Trip Wizard tool. It does not include meal breaks, rest room breaks, fuel stops, or pulling over because we saw something interesting, etc.

Week 1: Slow Start to a Long Adventure

Day 1: Packing, Lunch, and Long First Day

Austin to Shreveport KOA, LA – 316 miles, 5 hours.
Final packing took longer than expected. Lunch at Thao’s parents before taking off. Late arrival at Shreveport KOA at 10pm for a one night rest (I guess we could have skipped the Buccee’s stop but who does that?). They had no open sites so we took the overflow site. Backing up the trailer in the dark is hard!

Days 2-5: Mooch-docking at Friends Driveway and Outdoor Water Play

Shreveport KOA, LA to Madison, MS – 235 miles, 3.5 hours.
Slow start to our RV camping adventures means Mooch-docking at our friends house and driveway for 3 days! We enjoyed catching up, cooking meals together, and and loads of creative and outdoor play at Mississippi Children’s Museum and LeFleur’s Bluff Playground in Jackson Mississippi. Fun times relaxing by the pool, boating, and tubing on their community lake. This is mooch-docking at it’s finest!

Week 2: Tennessee & Virginia

Days 5-8: American Civil War Historical Sites and Outdoor Attractions in Chattanooga, TN

Madison, MS to Raccoon Mountains Cavern & Campgrounds, Chattanooga, TN – 399 miles, 5.5 hours.

We left our friend’s place around noon towards our next campground spot. Did you know there is a Statue of Liberty Replica in Vestavia Hills, Alabama? It was a great place to take a break. We later stopped by Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden, AL for a dinner break before arriving at , Raccoon Mountains Cavern & Campgrounds for a very late check-in at 11pm (yet again).

We really enjoyed visiting Lookout Mountain at Point Park and learning more about The Battles for Chattanooga part of the American Civil War. For just 3 days in Chattanooga, we covered a lot of ground including outdoor attractions such as Ruby Falls, Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, and Rock City Gardens. Coolidge Park and the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge were great to relax. We even managed to squeeze in a trip to the Creative Discovery Museum and a glass blowing experience.

Days 8-9: Natural Bridge State Park and Junior Ranger Badge

Chattanooga, TN to Lexington Natural Bridge KOA, VA – 402 miles, 6 hours.
Easy fun hike with awesome nature view.

Working on Junior Ranger Badges at Natural Bridge State Park

Day 9: Double Feature at the Largest Outdoor Drive-in Movie Theatre in the US

Lexington, VA to Middle River, MD – 251 miles, 4 hours.

Bengies Drive-In is a drive-in theater in Middle River, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, with the largest movie screen remaining in the United States. We watched Despicable Me 4 and Twisters from the comfort of our Airstream. Finally making use of that rear hatch!

Week 3: NYC Adventures and Legoland New York

Days 10-14: Jersey City Home Base While Exploring New York City

Middle River, MD to Jersey City, NJ – 160 miles, 3 hours
We arrived at the Liberty Harbor RV Park at 4pm EST, early for once! This Campground was a great home base as we explored NYC. Conveniently located, it was 15-minutes to nearest subway station or 7-minute bike to the ferry that goes from Jersey City to NYC.

Over the next few days we explored attractions like Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, the Edge at Hudson Yards for sky scrapper 360 view. We initially crossed over to NYC by subway and later discovered we could ride our bikes onto a ferry. We visited Central Park, 9/11 Memorial and even biked across Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge. We enjoyed a dinner in Little Italy.

Day 14-15: Legoland and Florida, NY

Jersey City to Florida NY – 62 miles.
We departed from Jersey City late morning straight to Legoland in Goshen, NY and spent the afternoon there. We checked in to Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY for the night to eat dinner and rest before heading to Boston the next day.

Week 4: Boston to Bar Harbor

Days 15-19: Abington, MA – 239 miles. Family time, Boston Museum of Science, and library visits.

Days 19-20: Old Orchard Beach, ME – 137 miles. Portland’s seafood scene.

Days 20-23: Sherwood Forest Campsite – 65 miles. Beach and lighthouses.

Days 23-28: Bar Harbor, ME – 118 miles. Five days exploring Acadia National Park.

Week 5: New Hampshire & Adirondacks

Days 28-33: Twin Mountain, NH – 234 miles. Visited Mt. Washington, Flume Gorge, and Echo Lake.

Days 33-36: Lake Placid, NY – 165 miles. Olympic Museum and The Wild Center.

Day 36: Ausable Chasm, NY – 25 miles. Hiked Ausable Chasm.

Week 6: New York Adventures

Days 37-40: Adirondacks – 71 miles. Adventure courses, museums, and forts.

Days 40-43: Mooch-docking in NY – 203 miles. Disc golf, swimming, and s’mores with friends.

Days 43-45: Rochester, NY – 141 miles. Lake cabin fun and city explorations.

Week 7: Niagara Falls to Kentucky

Days 45-48: Niagara Falls, NY – 93 miles. Laser tag and Clifton Hill excitement.

Days 48-49: Sunbury, OH – 317 miles. Quick visit to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Days 49-50: Airstream Factory – 76 miles. Toured the Airstream Factory.

Days 50-52: Louisville, KY – 147 miles. Explored Churchill Downs.

Week 8: Wrapping Up the Journey

Days 52-54: Mammoth Cave, KY – 97 miles. National parks and historical sites.

Days 54-56: Memphis, TN – 319 miles. Visited the National Civil Rights Museum.

Day 56: Paris, TX – 365 miles. One last overnight rest stop.

Day 57: Back home in Austin – 291 miles. Just in time for Logan’s first soccer game!
